Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the right to challenge certain calls from the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development follows just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
