At least thirteen people lose their lives and ninety-eight wounded in rail accident in Mexico.
A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's key public works projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” declared the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The building of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its duties in public infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated speed, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party urged an prompt suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party stated that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in complete compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic initiatives.
